We are very excited for our 4th Annual CRN Canada Féile on Saturday and looking forward to welcoming adjudicator Brian Cleary, from San Francisco, CA. Competing dancers and parents should read through all the information provided so they are well informed for the competitions.

Best wishes to all the dancers competing on Saturday! The dancers have worked incredibly hard this year and they have all made wonderful progress individually and as a group. Our instructors are extremely proud of the dancers and regardless of results or positions on the podium, we feel they are all winners in our opinions. Congratulations on all your accomplishments and we are excited to see everyone shine on stage at the competition.
ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND
Dancers, family, and friends are welcome to attend and we encourage our non- competing dancers to come out and support us for the Canada Féile. Admission is $7 for Adults & $5 for Children. Please note, competing Dancers have already paid admission as part of their registration.
For those attending we remind you we are welcoming dancers, parents, instructors, and adjudicators from Ireland and the U.S.A . For many of our attendees this is the first visit to Canada and we encourage parents and dancers to make sure everyone feels welcome and is well looked after. Please do your best to show a warm welcome to our visitors!

Instructor availability is limited during competitions as CRN Teachers are required to volunteer and organise all aspects of the Féile. Please be mindful of instructor’s time at competitions, but if you need them, they are always available.Instructors may not have time to watch every student compete and dancers must be prepared to compete without assistance from their teacher.
COSTUMES
All school costumes are registered with CRN so please wear appropriate school class costumes.

Team Dances
  • All dancers Winnipeg Teams should wear their class costume, bun wig, and poodle socks.
  • All dancers in Brandon Teams should wear their class costume, poodle socks, wigs are optional.

DANCE SHOES
  • Shoes should be well fitting, clean, and polished. Ill-fitting shoes may affect a dancer’s placement.
  • Absolutely no elastic in shoes laces (hard or soft). Use proper hard shoe or soft shoe laces only. Wide elastic, worn over shoes to help keep them on dancers feet is acceptable. If you are uncertain, please ask your instructor.
  • Double knot all laces and secure buckles on hard shoes. Untied laces will result in disqualification. If a dancer’s lace becomes untied, dancers should return to their position to wait until the competition is over.
IRISH DANCE WIGS
Wigs are optional for CRN Competitions, however we prefer dancers wear wigs rather than hair down. Dancers who wish to wear their hair down should verify the style with instructors prior to competition
  • Full, Bun, or Pony tail wigs are acceptable
  • Team dances must have their style of wigs coordinated by instructor.
  • Please make sure wigs are secure as dancer will be disqualified if it falls off.
TIGHTS & SOCKS
CRN Rule, dancers 20 and over must wear black tights.
  • Dancers under 20 may wear poodle socks or tights, however we prefer dancers wear socks as it shows off footwork better than tights
  • Team dancers must coordinate socks or tights, depending on age of the team.
  • If you are under 20 and you wish to wear tights please verify with your instructor prior to competition
  • Make sure your socks are newer, clean, white, and well fitting.
  • Sock glue is essential. Instructors will have sock glue on hand, for those who require glue, please see your instructor side stage.
MAKE-UP
MSD & CRN discourage the use of heavy make-up, spray tan, etc. especially with younger dancers. There are no stage lights at Canada Féile so heavy make-up is not necessary. Light or no make-up is acceptable.

PRACTICE GUIDE FOR DANCERS
Irish Dance progress is directly affected by focus and effort in class and practice time at home.
  • Practicing with music makes a difference!  Irish dance music is timed accurately we encourage dancers to use the practice music to held develop their rhythm and timing.
  • Wear your shoes when practising at home, it's safer and it improves your skill and technique, especially for hard shoe dancing.
  • Remember to warm up and stretch well before every practice.  Don’t forget to cool down.
  • To increase flexibility, dancers should spend at least 10 minutes a day stretching.

RECOMMENDED PRACTISE TIME
Not including warm up and cool down
  • Preschool / Beginner - 15 min  (3 - 5 times / week)
  • Novice / Preliminary - 20 mins (3 - 5 times / week)
  • Intermediate / Advanced -  30 min (3 - 5 times / week)
  • Performance Division -  30 mins (5 - 7 times / week)
  • Adult -30 mins (3 - 5 times / week)

HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING UP?
Consider Private Lessons
If a dancer is struggling or falling behind their class, sometimes an extra hour or two of private lessons is the easiest and fastest way for a student to catch up.
Private lessons are a great idea for parents who would like to learn the basic steps and technique to assist their child with at-home practice.

SUPPORTING YOUR DANCER - INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
  • Some children have a natural drive to practice on their own. These dancers need only support and encouragement to continue with their good practice habits.
  • Some dancers desire to progress with their dancing but have trouble understanding how to fit practice time into their day. These children often need help from their parents to set out a weekly practice plan and stick to it. Quite often, after a month or two of help and support, these children can learn to practice diligently on their own to achieve their goals.
  • It is important to discover what your child's practice style is and compare that with what their goals are for their dancing. As an Irish dance parent, your most important role is to accept the character type of your child and do your best to be supportive of them and the decisions they make regarding their Irish dance.
  • Offer encouragement, especially when your child may be struggling.
  • Please do not use punishment and withdrawal of love, affection and warmth to get your children to try harder or perform better.
  • If you child falls behind, please work with the instructors to determine a realistic goal for the dancer to achieve. It is essential that we have the full support from parents, especially when a child is struggling.
  • Avoid criticising your child's practice or performance.
  • Avoid criticising other dancer’s in practice or performance. Always be a positive role model for your dancer.
  • Do not get upset or treat your child differently when they make a mistake.
  • Stick to your parental role. Avoid trying to be your child's coach or teacher (i.e. becoming too involved in steps or technique, etc).
