Attachment: NA Qualifying Feile 2021 Syllabus.pdf.pdf (260.5kB)

The North American qualifiers will allow dancers to qualify to compete in the North American and/or Irish Open for 2021.  Both of these events will be digital due to the pandemic. This is a unique opportunity for dancers to compete in both the Irish Open (May) and North American Nationals (TBD) without the burden of travel.

We encourage dancers who have not yet qualified to consider entering this event.

Dancers who've moved out of their 2019 - 2020 qualifying levels, we recommend you enter this event to qualify at the level you are currently competing with.

If you're uncertain of whether or not the North American Qualifying Feile is for your dancer, please don't hesitate to contact us.  See below for more information.

Thank you,

Shayleen McConnell Finucan (ODCRN)

Who is this event for?

• Dancers who have not already qualified for the Irish Open & North American Open Championships.

• Dancers who have already qualified but who wish to try qualifying for a different grade

Who has already qualified?

• Dancers who are fully Ardghrad or Craobhghrad or equivalent

• Dancers who qualified through regional championships in 2019 or the qualifying feiles held in January and February 2020

Which event should I enter?

• Dancers may choose to enter one event or both qualifiers (North American or Irish Open).

• If you do not qualify in this event, you have the option to try again in the Irish Open Qualifiers.

How do dancers qualify?

• The number of dancers who qualify from the Irish Open and North American Open Qualifying

Feiles is as follows:

• Dancers placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th where there is a minimum of 7 competitors

• Where there are less than 7 competitors, dancers placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will qualify.

Which dances should I enter?

We strongly recommend dancers compete in as many dances as they are permitted within the level they are trying to qualify for.  Although dancers may qualify with just 1 dance, it is always better to have as many opportunities as possible.

If you are uncertain about which level you need to qualify or which dancers to enter, please contact us at info@mcconnelldancers.com BEFORE the registration deadline.

Adjudicators

Mr. Karl McCartin, ADCRN Ms. Claire McKenna, ADCRN Ms. Pauline Daly, ADCRN

Competition Age Groups

Age group is determined by the age a dancer will reach by 31st August, 2021.

The ages covered in an age group include the maximum age stated and younger. For example, “Under 9” includes dancers who are 9 or younger as of 31st August, 2021. Please ensure your dancer’s birthdate is entered correctly.

Entry Fees

Competition Registration Fee -  $35 / dancer
  • Solos Entry Fees -  €8.00 / dance
  • CRN Administration Fee - €6.00

All competition fees will be applied to dancers accounts upon registration.

Competition Numbers

Dancer's numbers will be emailed to dancers on Friday, February 5th, 2021.

New competition numbers are assigned each competition and dancers must wear their registration number, clearly visible in their videos for every dance.  Please print large bold text numbers or use a black marker to fill in large print.

New for this Competition

  1. Dancers MUST wear their number, clearly visible in every video. Videos will be refused if dancers are not wearing their number or if it is not clearly visible.
  2. The Digital Feis committee is asking dancers NOT to announce competitor number, dance, or level at the beginning of the video or have any graphics at the beginning or end with competition information.
  3. Videos should be titled competitor#_dance_level or 451_bunghrad_reel

Home Video Taping

Due to current health orders all videos must be recorded at home.  Please note, adjudicators will not penalise dancers for constraints due to small dance space and all competitors will be judged fairly based on technique and ability.

Room Preparation

Space used to record should have adequate lighting. Avoid recording with dancers back to a window or light source as the image becomes hard to view.

Dancers should avoid backgrounds of the same colour as their Feile attire, ie. dancers in black tights, black skirt and top should avoid a black background.

Dance space should be no more than 4 meters by 8 meters regardless of the space used.

Floor Preparation

The floor should be of an appropriate size to ensure the video image of the dancer is large enough for the adjudicator to view.

Dance floor should be suitable & safe, if using marley or vinyl or similar please ensure it is secured with tape.

Test your space and camera placement before beginning. Place tape or mark the floor as a guide for the dancer so they will know where to dance within the camera’s field.

Camera Setup

Videos must be less than 100MB in size

  • To change the settings on your android smartphone for recording less than 100MB Android Resolution Settings
  • To change the settings on your Iphone for recording less than 100MB per video iPhone Resolution Settings
  • Use a high-quality camera/phone to ensure a crisp, clear picture in the video.
  • Video resolution settings may be adjusted in a smartphone’s camera settings prior to recording.
  • Video should be recorded at 720p or 1080p, 30fps or 60fps. In order to minimize file size; higher resolution videos may not be submitted.
  • If needed, video files may be compressed by sending a video to oneself through an app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
  • The submitted video must be in one of the standard video formats that can be played in a web browser. This includes, but is not limited to: MPEG-4 (H264), MPEG-5 (H265), and MOV.
  • Horizontal/landscape orientation is preferred.
  • The camera should be in a fixed position and should not follow the dancer. Use of a stand for the camera is encouraged.
  • Camera should be about 4 feet from the ground.
  • Camera should be in the front/centre of the dance floor.
  • The entire floor and dancer, from head to toe, must be visible in the video at all times.
  • If using a camera on a mobile phone or tablet, use of the back camera is recommended to avoid recording a mirror image, i.e. not selfie mode.

Video Procedure

  • Recorded music may be used. Music speeds indicated in the CRN rules must be used.
  • Music should be played on a speaker or high quality mobile phone to ensure music is clear and loud in the video.
  • If you are connecting your phone to a bluetooth speaker for music, please ensure your notifications, e.g., ringtone, message alert tone, have been set to silent to avoid disruption with the music.
  • Each dance must be recorded separately & only 1 dancer per video.
  • Write the competitor number (received via email) on a card and secure it to the front of your costume while recording the videos. Ensure the number is clearly legible and visible in the video.
  • Parents may count in BUNGHRÁD competitors but may not offer any other assistance.
  • Dancers should perform the minimum number of bars indicated for each dance. If you are uncertain, please ask your instructor as dancers are penalised for submitting videos which aren't to complete length required.

SCHOOL NEWS

We hope everyone enjoyed the holiday break and we wish you all the best of health and happiness for 2021.  2020 was a year unlike any and we appreciate the challenges our dancers and their families have gone through in order to continue Irish dance.

Classes recommence on Zoom the week of January 4th - 11th, 2021.  The current provincial heath orders will be in place until January 8th and we will keep you updated if there are any changes.  We look forward to the time when we can all get back to the studio again but in the meantime, the hard work and fun will continue on Zoom!

In December our Performance Division worked on a holiday video where dancers recorded themselves at home, doing what they love to do!  If you haven't had a chance to view the video, click below for the Youtube link.

COVID - 19 UPDATE

Due to Manitoba Public Health orders we have suspended our in-person classes (Winnipeg and Brandon) and will continue with Zoom On-Line lessons, until these orders are been lifted.

The safety of our dancers, their families, and those in the greater community are of utmost importance to us.  Our dance family brings together students from many cohorts across the province and many of us have loved ones who are vulnerable. .

If we can pull together as a community now and follow all public health guidelines, we can reduce the numbers and get back to in-person classes again soon.

Stay strong, keep dancing, and we will get through this together!

FOLKLORAMA UPDATE
Snip20190129_33.png
Folklorama will be launching a NEW "Virtual Folklorama At Home" program where they will feature 10 Folklorama member groups in a professional filmed, 45 minute interview and workshop.  McConnell Irish Dance is pleased to have been selected as the group to represent Irish culture in the program.  The segments will be aired on Folklorama's Youtube and Social Media platforms beginning at the end of January until the spring.  McConnell Irish dance segments will be taped January 30th and aired close to St. Patrick's Day in March.
Starting January 15 and running every Friday at 7:00pm (CST), you and the whole family can enjoy complimentary virtual workshops from our ethno-cultural performers and Folklorama members!

NEW COSTUME ORDERS
Due to the uncertainty of performance dates for 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, new costume orders which would typically take place at this time of year will be delayed until the new year.  Once we have ascertained future performance dates we will proceed with costume orders.  Recognising young dancers grow quickly, we feel it's best for us to wait until dates are conformed before we ask families to invest in new costumes.
